Muslim Experience Mirrors That of Catholics

They have a funny foreign religion with funny rituals and funny houses of worship.

So they can't be trusted to be loyal to America.

Accusations against Muslims in 2010?

No, criticisms of Catholics at the turn of the last century.

With the recent furor over plans to build a religious center and mosque near Ground Zero in New York, anti-immigrant fervor has erupted once again. But it's nothing new to American history.

Catholics have felt the sting of nativism in the past, and I'm glad a few reporters and writers are starting to make the connection with those who profess Islam.

Armed with such a historical perspective - something many opponents seem to lack - protesting the construction of the mosque becomes much more difficult.
